Seeing Windows Error 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED) usually means Windows has blocked an action because the required permission is missing. This error can appear when installing software, updating Windows, opening files or folders, or changing certain system settings.

How to Fix Error 0x80070005

1. Run the Program as Administrator

If the error appears while opening or installing a program, right-click the program and choose Run as administrator.

This gives the application additional permissions that may be required.

2. Check File and Folder Permissions

If you cannot access a particular file or folder, check its permissions.

Right-click the item, select Properties, and open the Security tab. Make sure your Windows account has the required access.

3. Temporarily Check Security Software

Antivirus or other security tools can sometimes prevent applications from making changes.

If you suspect this is happening, check your security software settings. Avoid leaving protection disabled for longer than necessary.

4. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

If 0x80070005 appears during a Windows update, use Windows' built-in troubleshooting tools. They can identify common update and permission problems automatically.

5. Check System Files

Damaged Windows system files may also cause permission-related errors. You can use built-in Windows tools such as System File Checker (SFC) to check and repair system files.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
sfc /scannow

Wait for the scan to finish and then restart your computer.

Why Does This Error Keep Coming Back?

If the error returns after restarting, the problem may be related to account permissions, Windows Update components, damaged system files, or software that is repeatedly blocking access.
Try to identify when the error appears. Knowing whether it happens during an update, installation, file access, or another task can make troubleshooting much easier.
